The system has failed Cyntoia Brown every step of the way. As a teenager, she was forced into the commercial sex trade by a pimp known as “Kutthroat,” who raped and abused her, both physically and emotionally. At age 16, she defended herself against a john she thought was going to kill her. For this, she was sentenced to life in prison, ineligible for parole until the age of 67.
Cyntoia Brown was charged and sentenced as a prostitute, not as the child victim of sex trafficking that she truly was. For that prosecutorial decision, she has spent over half her life in prison.
It is time to correct that injustice, to consider the 13 years she has served as sentence enough. Outgoing Tennessee Governor Haslam has the ability to grant her this. He used this power this past Thursday to grant clemency to 11 other individuals. Cyntoia Brown was not on that list.
In granting these clemencies, Governor Haslam said, “These individuals have made positive contributions to their communities and deserve pardons, or are individuals who will receive another chance to become contributing members of society by virtue of their commutations.” Cyntoia Brown deserves the same.
